night body night voice
2024-25

night body night voice is a dance and sound performance about the fear of being alone at night in a female-read body. This fear resides deeply within the body, gleams in the eyes, and leaves a distinct taste in the mouth. It is fueled by stories, cautionary tales that relate to or describe experiences of sexualized violence. Together with sound artist Marquis' McGee and scenographer Lilli Unger, with dramaturgical guidance of Jo/Joseph/Josephine Baan, choreographer Charlotte Mathiessen invites the audience into a space where the fear of the night can be simultaneously enjoyed, feared, and reimagined.
night body night voice explores how narratives of sexualized violence are inscribed into the body and attempts to critically examine, rewrite, and approach more precise narratives through movement, sound, text, light, and live camera. In the performance, Marquis' McGee creates a nocturnal soundscape from various objects, written words are transformed into rhythmic sequences that inscribe themselves as precise hip movements into the body of Charlotte Mathiessen, and the mobile phone, with live camera, becomes both a witness and the fear that creeps up behind you. The audience setting on three sides creates closeness and intimacy between spectators and performers. The entire space on stage and behind the rows of audience members is used, worlds are created solely through sound and the boundaries between inside and outside, between fiction and reality are blurred.
night body night voice is a co-production with Tanzhaus Zürich and PREMIO Switzerland. The work premiered on February 28, 2025 at Tanzhaus Zürich.
